New Ranking Factor Survey Backs Up What We've Been Telling Clients: Content and Links Still Rule

Google ranking factors data shows content relevance, quality

If you've ever wondered why your website isn't climbing the rankings despite fixing every technical issue a plugin flagged, you're not alone. Small business owners spend hours chasing schema markup, core web vitals scores, and meta tag tweaks, only to watch a competitor with a plainer site outrank them. A large scale survey of the search marketing community, drawing on more than 13,000 individual data points from over a hundred practitioners, confirms what we've been telling clients for years about google ranking factors: content and links still do the heavy lifting.

This isn't a knock on technical SEO. It matters. But it's not where most small businesses should spend their first dollar or their first hour.

What the Data Says About Google Ranking Factors

The survey broke ranking signals into tiers based on how many experts flagged each one as highly important. Three factors landed well above 45 percent: content relevance, backlinks, and content quality. Nothing else came close to that top tier.

A second group, sitting between 25 and 40 percent, included trust and authority signals, behavioral click patterns, and brand presence. These matter, but they're secondary to getting the content and links right first.

Everything else, including user satisfaction signals, technical SEO, topical authority, and internal linking, fell under 20 percent. That doesn't mean technical SEO is unimportant. It means it's foundational, not decisive. A technically flawless site with thin, generic content still won't outrank a well-linked page that actually answers the searcher's question.
